Dune: Awakening’s free Blood and Ice expansion is scheduled for December 1, taking players from the desert into the Polar Sink in northern Arrakis. Funcom says the new survival map will arrive across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, with new progression, equipment and resources.
The change is more than a snowy backdrop. Desert survival equipment will not solve the region’s cold-weather problems, and players will need to develop new ways to stay warm. The expansion’s two biomes, tundra and ice cap, are designed around that shift in environmental pressure.
Reaching the ice becomes a progression goal
Funcom’s expansion announcement begins the journey in tundra controlled by wealthy water-shipping families. Their strongholds lead toward a more heavily guarded ice cap, where securing access to valuable resources becomes a major objective.
The developer estimates roughly 35 hours of new progression. That is a scope estimate, not a fixed completion time. Announced additions include vehicle modules, augments and specialization traits, with some materials available only in the Polar Sink.
Harvested ice can also cool equipment at a player’s base and accelerate production. That gives the new region a connection to established operations: a successful expedition can provide something useful beyond the northern map itself. The announced loop is to develop the gear needed to reach resources, then bring those resources into a wider production network.
Survival still connects to building and exploration
The base game combines survival, construction, crafting and exploration in an alternative version of Dune’s universe. Arrakis is already a place where environmental preparation affects what a player can safely attempt. Blood and Ice changes the preparation problem by shifting the emphasis from heat to cold and returning attention to ground-level traversal.
That distinction matters for an established character. Progress in one environment is not necessarily a complete kit for the next. The announcement presents new equipment and local resources as part of the expansion’s progression, rather than describing the Polar Sink as a sightseeing area that existing technology immediately trivializes.
Other planned features have different dates
The same developer update discusses offline single-player, character copying and full cross-play, but those are separate commitments. Offline single-player is planned for November. Character copying and cross-play are targeted for January 2027, rather than promised as part of the December 1 expansion.
The copying plan includes moving multiplayer characters into single-player and allowing copies onto eligible private or self-hosted PC servers. A destination server must permit copied characters. That is more specific than unrestricted transfer between every server, and players should not plan a move on the assumption that all destinations qualify.
Funcom is also introducing an optional cosmetic store, with outfits, vehicle variants and base customization. The announced Blood and Ice expansion remains free; cosmetic sales are a separate part of the game’s business model.
An Events tab will track progress and rewards, while a Water Crisis event is planned after the expansion. The immediate sequence is therefore clear: November’s offline-play target, December’s northern survival region and event additions, then January’s planned copying and cross-play systems. Each serves a different part of how players access and continue their Arrakis campaigns.
